Bring your customer service and construction experience to ODOT's Region 3 team as a highway maintenance specialist to function as a member of a maintenance crew to perform any required manual labor or equipment operation necessary to maintain, repair and/or reconstruct roadway/highway, freeway, bridges and/or rest area facilities.

Duties & Responsibilities
+ Maintaining vegetation areas, mowing grass, spraying pesticides and herbicides, and dispose of roadside debris.
+ Digging and cleaning ditches, catch basins and drainage systems.
+ Repairing culverts, inlets and erosion.
+ Maintaining rest areas and performing minor building maintenance. Installing and/or maintaining irrigation systems.
+ Performing surface repair, building or repairing roadway shoulders and bike paths.
+ Sweeping highway/roadway and performing clean-up of sidewalks, graffiti, paving, bridge walks, and islands.
+ Repairing or replacing guardrails, barriers, fences, glare screens, roadway delineators or milepost markers.
+ Servicing and repairing equipment and tools.
+ Replacing or maintaining highway/roadway, signs, striping and/or legends.
+ Plowing snow, sanding and deicing roadways.
+ Responding and coordinating accidents and other emergencies, providing traffic control and coordinating with other agencies to ensure safety and assist with clean up.
+ Reading and interpreting plans and layouts for projects.
Working Conditions
+ Operate on or near heavy equipment and power tools safely.
+ Exposure to noise, adverse weather, dangerous equipment, pesticides, fertilizers, and hazardous waste materials.
+ Manual labor is required. Must be able to walk, stand, bend, and stoop for extended periods of time and lift up to 50 pounds.
+ Employees are to be available at any time for emergency, on-call, and weather-related purposes.
+ This position operates Monday thru Friday. Winter and Summer schedule varies with business needs.
Qualifications, Required & Requested Skills
Minimum Qualifications
+ Two years of maintenance and/or construction experience in roadway/highway, bridge, sign, drawbridge or landscape (any type of ground maintenance, including tree, shrub and lawn maintenance; sprinkler system maintenance, cleaning ditches and catch basins, or work related to professional/commercial or public landscaping, farming or logging); AND
+ Experience in each of the following areas:
+ Operating heavy and/or light motorized equipment;
+ Using hand and power tools;
+ Performing minor servicing of equipment, AND
+ Applying safety procedures.
+ Two years of experience operating construction and maintenance machinery to include one or more of the following types: front-end loader, road grader, bulldozer, backhoe, tractor/low-boy, and 5- or 10- yard dump truck.
Special Qualifications
+ Driving is an essential function of this position. A valid driver license, an acceptable driving record and the ability to drive a manual transmission are required for this position. The employee will be required to use a commercial motor vehicle to conduct business; you must possess and maintain a valid commercial driver's license "Class A" CDL (without a manual transmission and 5th wheel restriction) with an acceptable driving record that meets all established agency, state and federal requirements pertaining to a commercial driver's license.We will conduct pre-employment driving records checks on our final candidate(s).
+ Though not required at time of hire, the successful candidate will be required to obtain an herbicide spray applicator license within six (6) months of hire.
+ This position has a maximum response time of 30 minutes to the reporting location of 61036 Highway 101 South, Coos Bay, Oregon 97420.

Don't Be Fooled

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
